Passive natural convection augmentation from horizontal cylinder using a novel shroud-chimney configuration: Experimental approach

In a prior study, we have numerically demonstrated the capability of the shroud−chimney configuration (SCC) (semicircular shrouds and extended chimney) to enhance the natural convection from horizontal cylinder. The improved confined flow and boundary layer characteristics resulted in better convection activities, which holds considerable promise for a broad range of applications. However, in order to implement such a configuration for practical utilizations, the heat flow properties must be observed and understood. In this work, experiments were carried out to present a proof-of-concept study on the impact of SCC on free convection heat transfer from a horizontal cylinder. Temperature measurements on the circumference of the heated cylinder surface, shroud and ambient air were conducted using thermocouples. The voltage and current of the heater have been recorded. From the measurements, steady state dimensionless average convection heat transfer coefficient (Nusselt number) has been calculated for both SCC and bare cylinder cases. In addition, numerical results from the previous study have been provided for comparison and validation. Both experimental and numerical results show that the heat transfer is improved when SCC is utilized indicating the validity of this inexpensive, simple, compact and passive enhancement technique for practical uses.
